Athlete Of The Week

Presented by: State Farm

Pleasant Hill Football – Jacob Neely

Neely has been elite in very phase of the game for the Billies this season. The senior standout has totaled 719 offensive yards from scrimmage (488 receiving, 132 rushing, 99 passing) and 12 touchdowns on offense. Defensively, he leads the team with 5 interceptions, adding 27 tackles, a fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown. He’s also contributed as the team’s punter and return specialist, averaging 17.4 yards per punt return and 13.6 per kickoff return. He led the Billies to their 52-0 win on the road againist La Pine last week when he caught two touchdown passes for 116 yards and added 48 rushing yards for two more touchdowns.

The Main Event:

SISTERS (5-1) AT PLEASANT HILL (5-1)

■ Game facts: Game facts: Game facts: Friday, Oct. 17, 7 p.m. … The Outlaws are ranked No. 6 in Class 3A and the Billies are ranked No. 17.
Tickets: Tickets: Adults $5.00…students $4.00…seniors $3.00
■ What2Know: The Outlaws have won this matchup five years running. The Outlaws have made the playoffs each of the past three years, while the Billies have not made an appearance since 2016. However, Kenny Koberstein’s team continues to show that the past struggles of the program won’t stop them from succeeding this year. Last week’s 52-point win over La Pine was the Billies’ largest since 2017, and the program’s five-game win streak is the longest since 2011. These teams sit atop 3A Special District 3, but Sisters’ Class 3A rank is much higher because of a stronger strength-of-schedule metric.

Thurston’s Cruz Gray celebrates his touchdown rush in the endzone at Silke Field on Friday. ADON ECCLES / THE CHRONICLE

The Thurston Colts entered Silke Field on Friday night looking to extend their nine-game winning streak against the crosstown rival Springfield Millers. After a back-and-forth first half, the Colts were able to do just that, winning 38-7 and extending their winning streak to double digits.

While the boisterous crowd Friday night would suggest a hostile dynamic between the schools, Thurston coach Justin Starck sees it as more of a familial rivalry.

“This always means a lot, it’s the crosstown rivalry,” Starck said. “We have a lot of respect for the folks at Springfield, for coach (Frank) Geske and their players. We see them all the time so it’s like playing a family member, you know? You just give a little bit more when you know the person better.”
