Billies rally late for win; Lions, Millers, and Colts fall in league play

In girls soccer last week, Cottage Grove lost to North Bend 4-1 last Monday. Brielle Engle scored the only goal for the Lions from an assist by Autumn Leach. Goalkeeper Nora Heegard made 14 saves. They then lost to the Spartans 8-0 on Monday and to the Marshfield Pirates 1-0 on Wednesday.

Pleasant Hill beat the Siuslaw Vikings 2-1 last Thursday. According to head coach Chris Hammond, the Vikings played with spirit and a lot of emotion behind a large home crowd that had to be “warned by the referees and the athletic director for inappropriate taunting” – and they were up 1-0 at halftime. But “the Billies stayed calm and collected,” Hammond said. Senior Kaylee Gardner scored the first tap-in goal off an assist from senior Trinity Smead. Then in the 78th minute, freshman forward Emerson Hill was fouled in their box and had to be carried off the field by her teammates. Trinity Smead scored on the penalty kick in the top right corner. Senior Kenna Caldwell-Copeland had 10 saves.

In Class 5A, Springfield lost to Churchill and Ashland last week and are on a six game losing streak. They are in sixth place in the Midwestern League. Meanwhile, Thurston was dominated by North Eugene / Triangle Lake 6-0 last Tuesday. North Eugene continues to be a dominant program throughout the years and is 10-0.
