SPRINGFIELD — On Jan. 29, at approximately 4:45 a.m., the Springfield Police Department responded to a traffic hazard report on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway near Riverbend Hospital. A caller reported that a man attempted to jump in front of her vehicle, but she was able to swerve around him. Upon arrival, officers found a deceased man in the roadway and a stopped vehicle nearby. Initial investigations suggest the man intentionally placed himself in front of oncoming traffic. The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was not the original caller and is cooperating with investigators. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
