Creswell City Council makes right call on garbage rates: LTE

I publicly want to commend and thank the Creswell City Council for unanimously voting to give staff the direction to terminate the Inter-Governmental Agreement, System Benefit Fee, with Lane County.

The council was given a lot of information from staff, a Lane County staff member and a representative from Sanipac regarding the financial implications of remaining in the agreement. It boiled down to increased garbage rates passed to Creswell residents due to the county charging – I call it fining – Sanipac for taking our garbage to Medford, where it is cheaper to dispose of than here at Short Mountain.

Our city council recognized this and voted in the best interest of the citizens of Creswell.

There was a lot of discussion of the CleanLane project and how Lane County screwed up in signing contracts before it had secured land to build the project on. The council seemed to feel that we shouldn’t have to pay extra for garbage service to pay for their screw up.

In my opinion, if Sanipac can keep our garbage service rates from going up by dumping the garbage in Medford rather than Short Mountain then I am all for that. I’m sure everyone here in town is, too.
