SPRINGFIELD – As the Northwest continues to face a critical shortage of affordable homeownership opportunities, First Story is inviting eligible families in the Springfield area to apply for a newly remodeled Fresh Start home in the Hayden Homes Westwinds community, with the first household selected in 2026.
This Oregon-based nonprofit provides affordable homeownership options through a zero-down, zero-percent, 30-year mortgage in collaboration with Hayden Homes.
Since its inception, the partnership has successfully helped 128 families achieve affordable homeownership, positively impacting their generational outcomes.
“Our philosophy is to Give As You Go, so together we build a strong community and lead fulfilled lives,” Ryan Jennings, president of Simplicity by Hayden Homes. “ It’s incredibly meaningful to care for our community with every First Story home that we work on.”
First Story’s 2026 Fresh Start home in Springfield reflects its mission of preserving affordable homeownership and fostering generational wealth in the Northwest. These homes, built by Hayden Homes, are sold back to First Story for refurbishment as families move onward. This program keeps critical housing opportunities in the community. The initiative is supported by Simplicity by Hayden Homes and other partners, who contribute materials, labor, and resources to ensure the home is ready for the next family.
“Solving the housing crisis will take collaboration from all of us, and we are grateful for the leaders, partners, and communities who continue to step up to make dreams come true for families across the Northwest,” said Claire Duncan, executive director of First Story. “Together, we’re preserving affordable housing and opening the door to homeownership for hardworking families ready to change their lives forever.”
First Story invites eligible families to visit their website for details on applying for a home, which includes completing free homeownership education through GreenPath by calling 877-337-3399. Selected families will participate in a Home Dedication ceremony with family, friends, and community partners to celebrate this significant milestone. For more information, visit firststory.org.
