The Main Event
Pleasant Hill Billies: 3-0 overall, ranked #7
Leading off: The Billies, ranked No. 7 in the preseason polls, host preseason No. 5 Harrisburg in a double-header Friday. The games, scheduled for 2 and 4:30 p.m., should be a great early-season test for 1st-year head coach Steve Williams’ squad. The Billies are led by Kiley Campos, who had 6 hits, 9 runs and 4 RBI’s in week one.
Cottage Grove Lions: 2-1 overall, ranked #10
Leading off: Cottage Grove has the Hidden Valley Spring Break Tournament this weekend. As of now the Lions are scheduled to play Douglas and Seaside, with two additional games against opponents that will be determined based on other results. Cottage Grove is looking to build off a play-in loss last season, and will need captains Josie Hitt, Olivia Joseph, and Lilly Waidtlow to play well in order to make the postseason this time around.
Creswell Bulldogs: 2-1 overall, ranked #10
Leading off: Head coach Scott Worsham returns for his 3rd-year as Softball coach and will want to build off a 1st-round playoff exit from last season. The Bulldogs have a unique squad, with 11 juniors, 3 freshmen and no seniors or sophomores. Creswell’s only game this week is on Tuesday against preseason No. 5 Harrisburg. Junior pitcher Hope Ukolov will look to continue her stellar play on the mound after being voted the 1st-team all-league pitcher last season.
Springfield Millers: 0-1 overall , ranked #8
Leading off: Springfield has three games this week, a rematch against Pleasant Hill and a double-header at Cascade. The Millers look to get back into the win column for the first time since April 10, 2018. If Springfield wants to grab a win they’ll need great all-around play from Holly Arendt, who started at pitcher and had Springfield’s only 2 hits last week.
Thurston Colts: 1-2 overall, ranked #20
Leading off: The Colts had a tough start to the season, but will have the opportunity to bounce back this week with the North Medford Spring Break Tournament. Thurston is currently slated to have four games: Del Norte (CA), No. 1 South Medford, Oregon City, and No. 4 Sheldon. The Colts are led by senior outfielder Sadie Decker, who was 2nd-Team All-State last season.
Baseball Previews
Cottage Grove Lions: 0-2, ranked #23
Leading off: The Lions, led by new head coach Nathan Rheuban, will be at Toledo on Friday before hosting Westside Christian for a double-header on Monday. Rheuban is looking to bring a new culture to Cottage Grove baseball, and will need the help of junior captains Isaiah Cushman and Christian Spear to do so.
Creswell Bulldogs: 0-3, ranked #27
Leading off: Creswell heads to conference-opponent Siuslaw tomorrow for a doubleheader. The Bulldogs have nine upper-classmen on the team, and are looking to improve on a 7-14 season last year in which they missed the postseason. If head coach Chris Whitmore wants to make the postseason for the first time as Creswell’s coach he’ll need captains Evan Jenkins and Jayden Kubishta to play well.
Pleasant Hill Billies: 2-1, ranked #22
Leading off: The Billies, looking to build off a quarterfinal finish last season, hosts a doubleheader against Harrisburg on Friday before a rematch against Class 5A Springfield on Saturday. Pleasant Hill is one of the favorites to win the Mountain Valley Conference this season, and a strong start against Harrisburg will be important. Junior Hunter Allen returns after making 2nd-team all-state last year.
Springfield Millers: 0-2, ranked #29
Leading off: Head coach Jim Fryback returns for his third stint at Springfield. Springfield’s only game this week is at Pleasant Hill on Saturday, a rematch of the season opener that the Millers lost 12-2. The Millers have lots of turnover on the roster, but return senior leaders Noah Roemen and Gabriel Laird. Springfield looks to grab its first winning season since 2014.
Thurston Colts: 1-1, ranked #8
Leading off: Thurston heads to Arizona this weekend for a fantastic opportunity. The Colts will be one of 100 teams competing at the Coach Bob Invitational held in Phoenix.
