Richard ‘Dick’ Simons: May 16, 1943 – Aug. 31, 2021

Richard “Dick” L. Simons, 78, of Cottage Grove, Ore. passed away peacefully at home Aug. 31, 2021 from acute myeloid leukemia.

Dick was born May 16, 1943 in Cottage Grove to parents Clayton and Grace (Beatty) Simons. He graduated from Cottage Grove High School and was drafted in the United States Army and served from 1965-67 at Fort Sill, Okla. He was awarded Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Dick worked 43 years in the lumber mill industry. He was a kind and soft-spoken man. There is nothing he wouldn’t have done for someone. Dick especially loved country living, and he often mentioned that he had the best childhood, best parents, best brothers, and felt blessed that he was able to live his entire life on the family property.

Dick loved animals, enjoyed working on projects at home, cutting firewood, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, trips to the coast, riding quads on the dunes, and he especially enjoyed looking over the incredible view from his front porch.

Dick is survived by his wife, Karol Kuhn Simons; brother Donald Simons; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Cheryl Simons; daughter Debbie, three grandsons and two great-granddaughters; stepchildren Ameila and Buck, five step-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

No formal service will be held per Dick’s wishes. He said that “he wouldn’t ask anyone to attend a service he didn’t want to attend.” In lieu of flowers, please donate to the hospice of your choice or to an animal or horse rescue organization. Arrangements by Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
