William “Bill” James Somerville, 89, of Creswell, Oregon, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026.
Born on August 11, 1936, in Eugene, Oregon, to George Edwin and Rebekah Rose Somerville, Bill lived a life marked by kindness, hard work, generosity, faith, humor, honesty, creativity, and a deep love for animals. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him. Bill worked as a sheet metal fabricator throughout his career and was known for his exceptional precision and craftsmanship. He retired from Garibay Heating in 1998. He also proudly served in the United States Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Outside of work, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, gold mining, and shooting sporting clays. He devoted time to coaching Little League Baseball and sharing his love of the outdoors with others. After retirement, he especially loved building elaborate bird feeders and birdhouses. A devoted Oregon Ducks fan, Bill rarely missed a game and enthusiastically followed every Ducks sport.
Bill is survived by his wife of 69 years, Rose Faessler Somerville; his daughters, Kathy Johnston, Lisa Hurlburt (Barry), and Toni Bird (Ken); seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons, William “Billy” Somerville and Michael “Mike” Somerville. Those who knew Bill will remember his kind heart, especially toward his family and animals. He was always ready to share his knowledge and lend a helping hand. Whether teaching someone how to repair a car, showing the proper way to bait a fishing hook, or passing along his expertise in the HVAC trade, Bill found joy in helping others learn. He also took great pride in maintaining his 11-acre property, grooming it to look like a beautiful park. His legacy lives on through the family and friends who were fortunate to share in his life.
A memorial gathering will be held later this summer to share stories, memories, and celebrate the life of a truly wonderful man. Bill will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his gentle spirit, generous heart, and the love he shared with those around him.
