SPRINGFIELD – Law enforcement officers from the Eugene-Springfield area were scheduled to run through the streets of Springfield and Eugene on Wednesday, July 8, carrying the Flame of Hope in support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Special Olympics Oregon (SOOR).
Celebrating 40 years, the Law Enforcement Torch Run aims to raise awareness and funds for SOOR while promoting acceptance and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
As Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement officers and Special Olympics participants will carry the Flame of Hope across Oregon, culminating in the 2026 Summer State Games in Corvallis on July 11 and 12.
Special Olympics Oregon serves over 5,000 participants with intellectual disabilities year-round through its sports programs, making it the largest organization serving people with intellectual disabilities in the state.
The torch run, which began in Wichita, Kansas, in 1981, now spans all 50 states and more than 30 countries, with over 1,500 law enforcement personnel participating in Oregon’s year-round campaign.
