SPRINGFIELD – A Springfield man was arrested last week after allegedly assaulting and firing a gun at family members and officers before fleeing via the Willamette River.
According to Lane County court records, on June 19, around 10:30 p.m., officers from the Springfield Police Department responded to a residence on the 600-block of Janus Street after receiving reports that Zachery Greer, 38, of Springfield, had used or attempted to use a gun against several people, including Lorrie Greer, Bradley Kelley, Kenneth Berry, and Andrew Douglas. The State also alleges he caused physical injury to Lorrie Greer.
SPD officials said that while officers were en route to the scene, Greer discharged a firearm before leaving the scene. Police located him near the intersection of Rainbow Drive and West D Street. He did not comply with their commands and fled south into the Willamette River. During the encounter, Greer pointed a rifle at the officers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. No one was struck by the bullets. Greer floated down the river for a short distance before officers captured him.
SPD detectives are investigating the initial domestic assault report, while the Lane County Sheriff’s Office has been requested to assist with the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
Greer was arrested and is facing multiple charges: six counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and four counts of Assault in the Fourth Degree. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
