Green, Stubbs fall in Four-Ball event

Thurston graduate Calvin Green and his teammate, Cade Stubbs, shot 3-under par during two rounds of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball championship in Scottsdale, Ariz. this week, but failed to make the cut for medal play.

Green and Stubbs were inside the cut line to make the round of 32 after shooting 4-under par in the first round on Saturday, but followed up with a 1-over-par score in the second round on Sunday to finish three shots below the cut at Desert Mountain Club.

Green, a 2009 Thurston graduate who went on to play golf at Northwest Christian University, was making his second appearance in a national championship after qualifying for the 2017 U.S. Amateur. He teamed up in the Four-Ball with Stubbs, a Sheldon grad who works at L.A.B. Golf in Creswell with Green.

In Four-Ball, both players play their own ball and the best score on each hole is counted for the team score. It is a relatively new format for the USGA, which began hosting the national championship in 2015.

Green got off to a hot start on the first day at the Cochise course as he made birdie on No. 1 and No. 4 before an eagle on No. 8 put his team at 3-under par.

Green added a birdie on No. 12, but both he and Stubbs bogeyed No. 16 and No. 17 to finish at 4-under par.

Green and Stubbs did not register a birdie until the eighth hole on Sunday on the Outlaw course and shot even par on the front nine. After bogeys on 13 and 14, Green had a birdie on No. 16 before the duo finished with two pars.
