When I reflect on the tradition of New Year’s resolutions, I wonder. A couple of years ago, my wife and I both discussed losing weight for our 50th wedding anniversary. But it wasn’t for New Year’s, it was as we were celebrating our 49th! I have never been someone who makes New Year’s resolutions. If I need to change something or eliminate a bad habit, why wait until New Year’s? Do it now! With apologies to Nike, Just Do It!!
A New Covenant… Sometimes I am overwhelmed by that Gift! That Gift freely given for my salvation, for the forgiveness of my sins. I am genuinely grateful for that gift. I am truly thankful for my future, here and beyond. But sometimes I am overwhelmed by the cost, the hours of pain and suffering. I wonder, am I worthy of that price? But then I reflect and realize that none of us are worthy, and yet God loves us despite who we are or what we have done. God loves us anyway! God just does!!
As I reflect on the idea of New Year’s resolutions, I think of that New Covenant, that new contract offered to each of us so many years ago – a new agreement signed in blood for my salvation. I have accepted that new contract, have you?
Here by the Grace of God.
