Veterans Day breakfast, services honor those who have served

SPRINGFIELD – The City of Springfield and The American Legion Post #40 co-hosted a Veterans Breakfast with Mayor Sean VanGordon to honor Springfield’s veterans and thank them for their service last Tuesday.

“The breakfast is a small but simple way to say thank you and to show our respect for the community and our gratitude,” VanGordon said.

Elyse Ditzel, Springfield public information officer, said, “This annual event serves as a moment of connection, gratitude, and civic recognition for those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces,” she said. “It reflects the City’s continued commitment to honoring and supporting veterans in the Springfield community.”

Veterans, city councilors, chamber members, police officers, and public officials gathered in the Emergency Operations Center of the Springfield Justice Center at 9 a.m. State representative Val Hoyle even made a special appearance to show her appreciation.

Nick Gillaspie, Commander of The American Legion Post #40, said roughly 30 to 40 folks attended last year’s breakfast, about the same turnout for this year’s event.

Commander Gillaspie served in the Air Force for 4 years, during which he worked on cargo planes and was honorably discharged.

“I miss working on airplanes,” he said. “I loved it.”

VanGordon delivered brief remarks recognizing the contributions and sacrifices of local veterans, while folks ate a complimentary breakfast.

“For the veterans, I want to say thank you. Thank you for your service,” VanGordon said. The crowd gave a round of applause for the veterans in the room.

“Veterans in Springfield are part of the backbone of the city. … Your courage, your leadership, and your sacrifices allow communities like Springfield and the United States to flourish, so thank you so much,” he said.

A continental breakfast of muffins, fruit, yogurt, and drinks like coffee, orange juice, and seltzer water was provided.

The Creswell VFW Post 4039 held its own annual Veterans Day observance, featuring participation from the Creswell Community Singers at the War Memorial outside of the South Lane County Fire and Rescue station just off Oregon Avenue.
