Grove celebrating ‘Goose Train’ mural

COTTAGE GROVE – The Cottage Grove Mural Committee is scheduled to celebrate the dedication of the Goose Train Mural tomorrow, Aug. 29, from 7-8 p.m.. The unveiling will take place at the mural’s site at the corner of Main and South 10th streets, adjacent to the Splash Pad at the north end of Bohemia Park.

The event will honor the rich history associated with Engine No. 19, a Baldwin Locomotive that operated between Cottage Grove and Disston from 1971 to 1988.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from mural artist Heather Endicott and local historian Faye Stewart about the significance of the Goose Excursion and its lasting impact on the community.

The locomotive, built in 1915, is fondly remembered for its distinctive whistle, bell, and the unforgettable journeys it provided along the scenic Row River and Dorena Lake.

The Cottage Grove Mural Committee, led by Chairperson Debra Monsive, began this project in January 2023.

Thanks to donations from community members during Art Walks and various fundraising events, the committee was able to raise the necessary funds to create this mural. Key contributors included the Woodard Family Foundation, Ernie Olson, South Lane TV, and Carolin Pettit.

Special recognition goes to Martin Hansen for sharing his time and historical insights during presentations about Engine No. 19, as well as the Cottage Grove Historical Society for facilitating the mural project.

The Mural Committee is comprised of dedicated volunteers, including Debra Monsive, Dana Merryday, Suzanne Huebner-Sannes, Gerald Santana, and Lloyd Williams, all committed to preserving and celebrating local history and culture through art.

Officials encouraged community to join in “this meaningful celebration“ in Bohemia Park.
