Springfield Arts & Culture Awards featured artist had humorous start

SPRINGFIELD – Calvin Orlando Smith was in the seventh grade when he heard Jim Nabors sing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” on The Gomer Pyle Show.

It was a life-changing experience.

During recess the next day at school, he stood on the playground and started singing.

“In my biggest untrained baritone, I sang, ‘Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord,’” he said during a 2020 interview. “Of course the kids laughed at me. They kind of giggled. But I continued to sing the next day and the next day. I was just singing to the trees.”

One of his teachers said his voice made the leaves on those trees rustle.

Now, the kid from the tiny town of Washington, Ga., has not only been a celebrated singer, he has also branched out to be an incredibly versatile performer.

On Saturday night at the Wildish Theater, Smith will be the featured artist during An Evening of Art, Recognition and Inspiration! Hosted by the Springfield Arts and Culture Awards (SACA), this annual celebration is akin the community’s own Grammy Awards.

After graduating from the University of Georgia, Smith went on to earn degrees from Oxford and Cambridge, where he was the first African-American to receive a degree in the school’s Department of History and Art. He has performed in Broadway musicals and has appeared on screen with the likes of Ben Vereen, Isaac Hayes, Florence Henderson, Bryant Gumbel, and Jane Pauley.

Smith’s artistry, legacy, and contributions to the performing arts continue to inspire generations.

This event recognizes Springfield’s most impactful artists, cultural organizations and creative leaders – those who breathe life into our community through their dedication to the arts.
