COTTAGE GROVE – Grovers will receive a nice boost in local history this month.
In February, the City of Cottage Grove received a Heritage Programs grant to partner with local media and historical organizations to showcase storytelling, photographs, and old-time tidbits that many are likely unaware of.
Through March, the City is partnering with The Chronicle and KNND Radio to highlight its rich history through an Oregon Heritage All-Star Community grant.
The City “received the grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Heritage Programs, given to the City of Cottage Grove … to promote the Partners in History, bringing focus to the unique stories of Cottage Grove’s past,” said Leni Crow, associate planner and floodplain manager for the Cities of Cottage Grove and Drain. “We are excited for the opportunity to help showcase the rich history of Cottage Grove, and bring more interest in learning about and respecting our past.”
The grant covers the cost of marketing to bring focus to the unique stories of Cottage Grove’s past.
Each Thursday, The Chronicle will publish stories, historical photographs, and helpful information about the area’s Partners in History — a group of nonprofit and government organizations dedicated to enhancing community and visitor awareness of our regional history. Those players include Cottage Grove Museum, Cottage Grove Historical Society, Cottage Grove Genealogical Society, Bohemia Gold Mining Museum, Oregon Aviation Historical Society, and Singing Creek Educational Center.
KNND general manager and owner Cameron Reiten will showcase the series on his channel. Reiten said he is still planning his coverage and will update listeners on his various sites.
“Cottage Grove is a wonderful town with a fascinating history,” Reiten said. “KNND is excited about partnering with the city and other media outlets to keep that history alive for present and future generations.”
As readers and listeners will come to know, all organizations contribute differently to preserving the past. The group seeks to expand its resources with books, documents, and material culture items that reflect and tell the historical events of the past that are relevant to today and future generations. It also provides rotating Cottage Grove Public Library educational displays.
