Become a Certified Youth Support Specialist

Connected Lane County has upcoming sessions for Youth Support Training, a 40-hour program approved by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), and designed for youth and young adult peer support providers. The training includes youth empowerment, motivational interviewing, ethical responsibilities, mandatory reporting, trauma-informed care, person-centered services, self-care, as well as crisis intervention and prevention. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to register as a certified Youth Support Specialist with the state of Oregon. Eligibility Requirements: Must be between the ages of 17-24 years old. (Must be 18 to gain certification.) and daily attendance. Training Details: Each session is limited to 25 participants. Lunch and breaks are provided.

Springfield Student Reports

The Academy of Arts and Academics celebrated Banned Book Week with a read-out in collaboration with the Springfield Public Library. The students took turns reading pages from the book “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” in the library’s atrium area. 

At Gateways, students are preparing for upcoming night school classes, which include “The History of Rock,” “Geometry,” and “Astronomy.” 

Gateways Cosmetology is in full swing for advanced-level students, who are now seniors. They have been taking clients and improving their talents. Willamalane seniors came in for free services, which will become a quarterly tradition. 

Springfield High implemented a new digital hall pass system, Students can log in and request a hall pass. This system tracks how many students are out at a time, how long they are out, and where they are going.

Thurston High implemented Thurston Thrift this year so that students have the resources to get clothes. The school also has the usual resource center where food, hygienic products, and school supplies can be found. Its Family Resource Center coordinator is seeking 100 community responders to sign up.

Thurston High’s fall play, “One Stoplight Town” by Tracy Wells is showing Nov. 7-8, and Nov. 14-16.

Unwanted, unused, broken electronics? 


Donate them to your student’s school during the NextStep Electronics Recycling Competition from Jan. 7 to March 20, 2025. Schools that recycle the most e-waste can win grants of up to $500, a NextStep Reuse Store computer gift certificate, and a recognition award! Last year, 18 Lane County schools collected 13,269 pounds. Pass on the competition registration form by Dec. 13 to your student’s principal by visiting wastewiselane.org/ERC.
