Girls soccer previews, recaps: Oct. 17 edition

Cottage Grove Lions (3-4-2, #23)

Kicking off: The Lions will face an imposing league opponent, Marist Catholic, tonight. The Spartans beat them 6-0 earlier in the season. They’ll need to rely on standouts such as Brielle Engle, Emmy Bickford and Maddie France to battle the Spartans.

Creswell Bulldogs (7-3-2, #11)

Kicking off: The Bulldogs head to Elmira for their last scheduled league game of the season this Wednesday. It remains uncertain if the Bulldogs will make the playoffs; they’ll need to rely on the teamwork of Mila Nguyen, Elliette Kinney, and Kendal Durflinger, and defensive standouts Jordyn Marklin, Raelee Green, and 2023 1st-team all-league goalie Kylie Leonard.

Pleasant Hill Billies (8-2-2, #12)

Kicking off: The Billies will host their last scheduled league game of the season this Wednesday. They’ll the No.2 Central Linn / East Linn Christian Cobras. Earlier in the season, the Cobras edged out the Billies 2-0. Junior striker Trinity Smead will be a key part of this last game as well as senior captain midfielder Tessa Hammond and GK Kenna Caldwell.

Springfield Millers (2-4-1, #25)

Kicking off: The Millers will host a difficult league opponent on Saturday: the Ashland Grizzlies. Last year, the Grizzlies edged out the Millers 4-3. 

Thurston Colts (7-3, #8)

Kicking off: The Colts face the Churchill Lancers this Wednesday. The Lancers have only two wins this season and have been struggling. This is an opportunity for the Colts to improve their playoff seeding. Look out for Lauren Kranzush, Amber Acocella, and Emmie Gerdrum.

RECAPS

Cottage Grove lost to North Bend 1-0 last Thursday. Many of the team starters are riddled with injuries at the moment. However, head coach Sarah Leonard said she was “ proud of how other girls stepped up.”

Springfield lost to North Eugene/ Triangle Lake 7-0 last Thursday.

Thurston handled Ashland 5-1 last Saturday. Macy Taylor opened up the scoring 18 minutes into the first half off an assist by Alexandria Delpino. A few minutes later, Amber Acocella finished a free kick by Emily Kranzush. The Colts went into halftime up 2-0. Then, Emmie Gerdrum scored an unassisted goal seven minutes into the second half after she beat three defenders. Kranzush scored on a free kick with 17 minutes left in the game and one minute later, Taylor added the final goal when she beat two defenders and Ashland’s goalkeeper. Ashland’s Kendal Yazzolino scored on the Colts in the game’s final minutes.
