Barbara Sly
May 17, 1949 — July 3, 2024
Barbara Jo Sly was born on May 17, 1949, in Vallejo, California, and passed away July 3, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon, after a battle with cancer.
As a girl, Barbara grew up in Springfield, camping with her family, being a big sister to her three siblings, and playing sports. She graduated from Sheldon High School in Eugene, Oregon, and then served in the U.S. Navy. She married James Sly in September 1973, and they immediately shipped out to Sicily, Italy, and later Virginia Beach, Virginia, for Jim to complete his four years in the Navy. By the time they had arrived back at the Sly family farm in 1977, their family had grown to include three daughters, all of whom survive her – Dawn Teresa Sly of Corvallis, Belinda Sly (Joey McDonald) of Lexington, Kentucky, and Marianne Sly Carothers (Ryan Carothers) of Creswell. Barbara and Jim also adopted their granddaughter, Hannah, now 11.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Darold Payne and Phyllis Jensen Payne. She is survived by her three younger siblings — Scott Payne, Kathy Sahabdeen, and Will Payne.
Barbara was a dedicated and loving mother, wife, and friend. She devoted herself to her daughters and extended her kindness and concern to all her friends and family. She was known for her empathy, generosity, and wonderful sense of humor, which endeared her to everyone.
Barbara played volleyball for many years and remained a sports fan all her life. Over the years, she had many roles on the farm, from bucking hay to filling syringes to doctor cattle to supporting Jim during his long days of work. She enjoyed taking walks with her dogs and friends, reading, sewing, tending to her flower gardens, and especially loved to travel. This past December, she was able to visit Maui one more time, her favorite destination. She had a special fondness for cats and often had one or more vying for space on her lap.
Barbara was a beloved part of the Creswell School system and wider community. She was a dedicated parent, a member of the Creswell School Board, and an employee and volunteer at Creslane Elementary School for many years. Many residents remember her kindness and impact, recalling her warmth and support when they were children at Creslane.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a local animal shelter or humane society in her name.
