Summer Sports Zone Briefs: All-state spring, Olympic Trials

Colts lead the way with all-state baseball honors

■ Thurston’s state championship baseball team placed numerous players on the all-state teams for the 2024 spring season. 

The Colts earned their second consecutive state title under coach Dennis Minium. Here are area players who earned statewide recognitions for the spring season. 

(Note that Class 5A and 4A All-State Softball has yet to be released, as of The Chronicle’s June 11 deadline.)

U.S. Track Olympic tickets on sale

■ The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track & Field are returning to the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field from June 21-30. The team trials will determine the U.S. representatives in the Paris Olympics this summer.

U.S. Rowing returning to Dexter Lake

■ The USRowing Northwest Masters Championships is returning to Dexter Reservoir in Lowell from June 21-23. The championships were normally hosted at Vancouver Lake in Washington, but due to issues at Vancouver, Dexter hosted last year, and will again this year.

The Oregon Association of Rowers (OAR), a masters rowing club situated on Dexter Lake, will help put on the event once again. Michael Peixoto, Board President of the OAR, said nearly 700 athletes were scheduled to compete at last year’s event.

Willamalane announces summer events

■ Alllll aboard!: The “Children’s Celebration” at Island Park is a family-friendly event that presents the opportunity for exploring community resources, games, riding the Willamalane train, and watching live performances. Leashed pets can roam the PetFest section of the “Children’s Celebration” area to explore local pet-friendly resources and organizations. It all takes place Saturday, June 29, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food donation. 

Take a walk:  Enjoy the outdoors  or join a guided yoga session outdoors at Dorris Ranch on Saturdays this summer!

Run, jump, throw: This hands-on event gets kids excited about physical activity by introducing running, jumping, and throwing skills in a friendly, competitive atmosphere. It’s free, but you’ll need to register at willamalane.com.

Summer hours: Camp Putt – Starting Saturday, June 15, open daily from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. … Splash – Starting Sunday, June 16, open daily for waterpark swims. … Willamalane Park Swim Center – Starting June 16, will have recreation swims on Fridays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Please note that facility hours will be affected on Wednesday, June 19, in recognition of Juneteenth.
