Gilbert Allen Yearous: Nov. 18, 1928-Oct. 12, 2023

Gilbert Allen Yearous, a devoted family man, passionate forester, and lover of life, passed away peacefully on Oct. 12, 2023, in his birthplace of Cottage Grove, Ore. 

Born on Nov. 18, 1928, to the late Roscoe and Nora (Hull) Yearous, he was an integral part of the community throughout his life. Gilbert was well known for his sense of humor, kindness, and passion for everything he set his heart on.

Gilbert graduated from Cottage Grove High School and devoted his life to the forest industry. He managed timber where he oversaw the planting and logging of trees, as well as the production of firewood. He also served a short term in the National Guard, showcasing his dedication to service. Gilbert was a long-standing member of the Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge, where he formed many friendships and contributed to the community.

Throughout his life, Gilbert was married twice; first to Lorraine Virginia Thomas-Porter for 19 years, then to Lenore Olson for 7 years.  He had a life partner, Ella Velasquez for 36 years. Gilbert’s life journey was marked by his love for family, commitment to work, and his zest for life. He was the beloved father to eight children; Paul, Virginia, Connie, Mark, Kathleen, Yvette, Madelyn, and Gina; and two stepchildren; Kathy and Maria.

Known for his love of the Oregon Ducks, Gilbert was a die-hard fan of the college football team. He was often found cheering them on, showcasing his unwavering support. He enjoyed country music, his dogs, and playing solitaire. His love for dancing was infectious, and there was always a line of ladies waiting to dance with him. Gilbert had a green thumb and carried his passion for forestry into his personal life, often seen planting and harvesting trees. 

However, his greatest joy was spending time with his family, creating memories that will be cherished forever.

In every role he played, whether as a father, a grandfather, a forester, a friend, or a community member, Gilbert was a beacon of joy, kindness, and passion. His sense of humor was contagious, often lighting up the room with his jokes. He was a kind soul who was always ready to lend a helping hand. His passion for his work, his hobbies, and his family was evident in everything he did.

Gilbert’s life was a testament to the power of love, hard work, and humor. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. 

As we bid farewell to Gilbert Allen Yearous, let us remember him for the joy he brought into our lives, his unwavering kindness, and the passion with which he lived every day of his life. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

Gilbert is survived by eight children: son Paul (Janet) Yearous of Cottage Grove, daughter Virginia (Ed) Smith of Cottage Grove, son Mark  (Eileen) Yearous of Creswell, daughter Kathleen (Larry) Moore of Cottage Grove, daughter Yvette (Lee) Blue of Cottage Grove, daughter Madelyn (Aaron) Baker of Idaho Falls, ID, daughter Gina (Ryan) Yearous of Roseburg, Ore., and stepdaughter Maria Goins of Creswell, Ore.; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and 14 great- great-grandchildren. 

Gilbert is preceded in death by both his parents Roscoe and Nora (Hull) Yearous, life partner Ella Velasquez, daughter Connie Smith, ex-wife Lorriane McConnell, stepdaughter Kathy, and all his brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Cottage Grove Armory, 628 E. Washington Ave. Arrangements in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.
