Softball recaps
Cottage Grove: Cottage Grove had a roller-coaster week with two doubleheaders. On Tuesday the Lions beat Mazama 6-4 in game one before falling 25-4 in game two. Emily Pacheco had a whopping 17 Ks in the win, while Valerie Aura led the way on offense with 3 hits, 2 runs and 1 RBI. In a Friday doubleheader, Cottage Grove upset No. 8 Marshfield 6-3 in game one before losing game two 17-2. Pacheco had another great performance in the win with 15 Ks, and Josie Hitt had 4 hits and 2 runs.
Creswell: Creswell had a big bounceback week, beating No. 7 Harrisburg 8-2 on Thursday before going 2-0 against Sisters on Friday, 19-4 and 16-1. Hope Ukolov had 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBIs against Harrisburg to go along with 3 Ks, while Lizabelle Osorn had 2 hits, 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Ukolov added 3 hits, 6 runs and 1 RBI in the two wins on Friday.
Pleasant Hill: Pleasant Hill’s sole game last week was a 12-2 win over No. 18 Valley Catholic. Shyanne Fenley had a stellar performance, scoring three times, hitting an RBI double in the first inning and an RBI triple in the 6th inning. Bella Black had 6 Ks on the mound, allowing only 2 hits in 6 innings.
Springfield: Springfield lost all three games in the series against No. 15 Crater last week, 23-0, 16-1 and 15-0. Holly Arendt drove in Reagan Kumle with a double in the first inning for Springfield’s only run of the week.
Thurston: Thurston swept a series against North Eugene last week, winning 17-1, 15-0 and 9-6 to improve its winstreak to six. Syren Ferguson led the way in the first two games, finishing with 4 hits, 6 runs and 6 RBIs. Gabriella Montes led the way in game three with a 2-run triple in Thurston’s 6-run 4th inning.
Baseball recaps
Cottage Grove: The Lions had a perfect start to the league season, beating Marshfield 11-9 and 6-2 on Friday. Christian Spear led the way in both wins. In game one, Spear had 2 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBIs. In game two, Spear finished with 2 hits, 2 runs and 1 RBI.
Creswell: The Bulldogs fell twice on Friday in a doubleheader against No. 7 Sisters, 5-0 and 12-0. Coby Contreras had 4 Ks in game one, and Evan Jenkins had 4 Ks in game two. Alex Lopez had 2 hits on the day to lead Creswell.
Pleasant Hill: Pleasant Hill had a competitive week, beating No. 7 Sisters 6-3 on Thursday before falling to Class 4A No. 3 Marist Catholic twice on Friday, 9-3 and 8-7. Caden Richardson led the way in the Sisters win with 2 hits, 2 runs and 5 Ks. In the Marist losses, Brasen Holliday had 5 hits, 3 runs and 1 RBI.
Springfield: The Millers went 1-2 in a series against No. 10 Crater, losing game one 8-5, winning game two 7-6, and losing the final game 13-3. Tim James led the way in the first loss with 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. In Springfield’s win, the Millers scored four runs in the final inning to snatch the victory. Noah Roemen had 2 hits, 1 run and 2 RBIs, while Dylan Leas had 5 Ks.
Thurston: Thurston extended its winstreak to nine with a 3-0 series against North Eugene, highlighted by impressive pitching. Game one was a 9-0 win thanks to Connor Molony pitching the whole game and allowing only one hit. Game two was an 11-1 win in five innings in which freshman Grady Saunders threw a no-hitter and had 9 Ks. Thurston won game three 9-5 as Saunders and Eli Crist both had 2 hits, 1 run and 3 RBIs.
