Fall sports recap

Volleyball

■ No. 15 Thurston won two road games, defeating North Salem 3-1 and Ashland 3-0.

■ Springfield had two tough, hard-fought losses. The Millers fell in four sets to No. 12 Marist Catholic, and three sets to Mountain View.

■ No. 8 Pleasant Hill handled 15th-ranked La Pine in three sets before falling to Creswell in four.

■ No. 2 Creswell beat Harrisburg and Pleasant Hill in four sets each.

■ Cottage Grove fell to 0-4 with a five-set loss to Molalla and a three-set loss to Hidden Valley.

Boys Soccer

■ Thurston had two matchups this week, a 1-1 draw against Silverton and a 1-0 loss at Crescent Valley.

■ No. 8 Springfield went 2-0 this week, both away games. The Millers beat Crescent Valley 1-0 before dominating Marist Catholic 4-1.

■ Pleasant Hill had two matchups this week. The Billies 1-1 draw last Wednesday against Westside Christian and then dominated Western Christian on Monday 4-1, scoring three of those goals in the first half.

■ Creswell had two home matchups, a 3-2 loss against 5th-ranked Milo Adventist Academy and a 2-1 win vs. Junction City.

■ Cottage Grove went 0-2 this week, both away games at ranked teams.  The Lions fell to 14th-ranked Philomath 1-0 and 3rd-ranked Stayton 5-0.

Girls Soccer

■ Sixth-ranked Thurston traveled to Silverton and dominated the Foxes 4-0.

■ Springfield had two home games, a 2-1 win against Crescent Valley and a 3-1 loss against 8th-ranked Marist.

■ No. 8 Pleasant Hill won its season opener at home against Santiam Christian 3-1. Senior Emma
Dyemartin
and juniors Dakota Hyland and Tressa Geyer all had one goal. Geyer and sophomore Tessa Hammond each had an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Kenna Caldwell had five saves. The Billies then drew 0-0 against No. 2 Sisters, a 2021 4A playoff team that moved down to 3A this year. Caldwell had six saves. Then on Monday Pleasant Hill blanked Elmira 5-0 behind Geyer’s two goals and an assist. Dyemartin, Savannah Endicott, and freshman Ryan Thomas had one goal. Hammond and freshman Trinity Smead also contributed an assist each. Caldwell had 4 saves in goal. 

■ No. 10 Creswell had an up-and-down week, first getting beat 8-0 by No. 2 Sisters before turning it around for a 3-0 win versus La Pine. The Bulldogs then beat Siuslaw in their first road game of the season 5-3.

■ Cottage Grove lost to 10th-ranked Philomath 8-0 before earning its first win, 3-2 vs. Stayton.

Cross Country

■ Springfield made the trip to the Marist XC Invite. The Millers boys came in 3rd, led by junior Aonghas Houston in 10th with a time of 17:04.3. Meanwhile the girls were led by junior Carrie Babcock, who came in 6th with a time of 21:15.8.

■ Cottage Grove and Thurston traveled to the Saxon Invite in Salem on Saturday. The Lion boys came in 8th, while the Colt boys came in 10th. Senior Jaden
Owens
of Cottage Grove came in 7th at 16:17.23 and his sophomore teammate Carter
Bengtson
came in 9th at 16:22.40. The Thurston boys had two runners in the top 30, junior Nate
Glazier
in 23rd at 17:27.92 and freshman Carson Buergey in 29th at 17:53.78. On the girls’ side, Colts senior Breanna Raven came in 6th at 20:13.95 and senior Stephanie White came in 29th at 22:19.02. The Lions girls team only had one runner in the top 30, sophomore Allison Palluck in 21st with a time of 21:46.27.
