County hosts panel on behavioral health center

■ Lane County officials have organized a panel discussion and input session to present and gather feedback on the proposed 42-bed Behavioral Health Stabilization Center on Thursday, June 16 at 11 a.m. Panel members will include Lane County Commissioner Laurie Trieger, Captain Clint Riley from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Shana Mart from Lane County Behavioral Health, Alicia Beymer from PeaceHealth, and Jennifer Maclean from National Alliance on Mental Illness. The 42-bed facility has been in planning phases for several years and is now actively seeking a site. Part of that process includes engaging the community to explain the intended purpose of the facility, answer any questions, and gather feedback. The discussion will take place live as a Zoom webinar and is open to all. For more info: LCStabilizationCenter.com

Recycling options expand for residents, businesses

■ Lane County residents with curbside recycle carts can add #1 and #2 bottles, jars, and jugs to their recycling. This expanded list of items – which must be clean, dry, and larger than a tennis ball – rejoins the recyclable materials stream after being excluded in 2018, following a global recycling market crisis. Since then, the market and sorting process have improved, according to Lane County Waste Reduction Program supervisor Angie Marzano. The act – which went into effect June 1 – attempts to make recycling easier for the public to use, expand access to recycling services, and upgrade the facilities that sort recyclables. The full rollout is scheduled by July 1, 2025. More info: LaneCountyOR.gov.

Waterfowl no longer accepted at wildlife rehab

■ Many wildlife rehabilitators are not accepting waterfowl due to the spread of avian flu in wild birds. Because waterfowl can carry the virus without showing symptoms, allowing them into rehabilitation facilities can put all the birds at the facility at risk. In Oregon, avian flu was first detected in wild birds in Canada goose goslings at Alton Baker Park in Eugene and it was also found in several red-tailed hawks in May. The current detections of the highly pathogenic virus have occurred only in Linn and Lane counties but ODFW biologists expect it to spread over the next several weeks. While very contagious and deadly for some birds, the risk to human health is low according to the CDC. It is important to leave wild birds in the wild to give them the best chance for survival. More info: Wildlife Health lab at 866-968-2600 or email at [email protected]
