Duane Coop – Nov. 23, 1931 – Jan. 26, 2022

Duane Coop of Lorane, Ore. passed away peacefully on his ranch on Jan. 26, 2022. Duane was 90 years old. He was born in Cottage Grove, Ore. on Nov. 23, 1931 to Zac and Grace Coop. 

Duane graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1951 and married his high school sweetheart Jean Odom on Dec. 31, 1952. They moved to Creswell, Ore. where they raised two children, Cindy and Mike.

Jean and Duane built several businesses in the Creswell community and had a successful logging business. He loved to buy and sell real estate and had bought and sold over 55 properties and ranches. 

He and his wife were huge supporters of the Creswell Future Farmers of America program and he was awarded National recognition by the FFA for his service. He mentored lots of youth through his support of the FFA and his church.

He was a minister and elder in the Community of Christ Church. He officiated over 50 marriage ceremonies and gave countless sermons. He helped to build the local Community of Christ Church where he attended and served in Cottage Grove.

He was a World Champion Ax Thrower. He competed and won Championships throughout the 1970s and early ‘80s. He rarely missed the center of the target. 

He and his wife moved to their ranch, Sun Mountain in the Lorane Valley, where he continued with his work and hobbies, which included ranching cattle and timber, building and running his sawmill, building and carpentry, welding, collecting antique logging and farm equipment, investing in real estate and fabricating and building anything he could think of and wanted to make. He loved working, building and creating his ranch.

He cared about people and made many lifelong friendships. He knew no strangers. 

He is survived by his brothers Vernon Coop and Dale Coop (Marilyn), granddaughter Ashley Rogers (Jesse), great-grandchildren Tanya and Travis, grandson Daniel Coop (Sabrina), daughter-in-law Candy Coop, step-grandchildren Lindsey Roberts (Wayne) and Jessica Trout and their children. He has many nieces and nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Gale in 1990, daughter Cindy in 2012, wife Jean in 2016 and son Mike in 2019. A funeral service will be held at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove on Feb. 5 at noon. There will be a private family burial at Sun Mountain Ranch Cemetery.
