BOYS BASKETBALL
Games
Tuesday, Dec. 10
CHS vs. Waldport, 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 12
CHS vs. Horizon Christian, 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 14
CHS at Elmira, 5:45 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 17
CHS at Sutherlin, 7 p.m.
What2Watch: Elmira and Sutherlin are both former Sky-Em rivals and that always adds another layer of competition for the Bulldogs. Waldport and Horizon Christian are both young teams that Creswell beat on the road last year, so they’ll be looking for revenge.
Who2Watch: Waldport returns sophomore Zak Holsey from last year, who was Second Team All-League last year as a freshman in the Sunset league. Horizon Christian has had multiple league championships, has been to state three years in a row, and won a championship of their own as recently as 2012. Despite their young team and ”rebuilding” year, you can’t count out a program with that sort of success under its belt.
Notable: Creswell is ranked sixth overall in the updated OSAA coaches poll.
Quotable: ”We have a tough non-conference this year and we’re playing really good teams. We’re going to have to play well and work on our rebounding and defense if we’re going to do well over the next couple of weeks,” said head coach Jesse Thomas.
WRESTLING
Event: Jefferson Tournament, Wednesday, Dec. 13, 3 p.m.
What2Watch: Oregon has been opening up even more opportunities for girls to wrestle, creating their own districts and tournaments throughout the year. Watch for exhibition matches for CHS’ seven female athletes as they take advantage of OSAA widening their scope.
Who2Watch: Rogelio Legorreta is Creswell’s 2019 state qualifier that has eyes set on going back to the big dance in 2020, so watch as he competes through the season and prepares for districts. Also watch for athletes from Creswell’s division because they could be the competition for the Bulldogs when districts roll around.
Noteable: Creswell’s other state qualifier for 2019 was Alex Metteer, who transferred and so did not return for the Bulldogs.
Quotable: ”Every day in practice, those kids come in ready to compete. They could be battling a teammate in the same weight class for a spot in the next tournament, they could be preparing themselves if they’re set to drop up or down a class or whatever, but they are always preparing to prove that they’re the best. You never know what each week will bring because you never know who is going to step up their game. So we’ll see what happens at Jefferson and who decides to bring it,” said head coach Mario Perez.
