Help yourself’ said the Colonel

Dear Editor,
For clarity “The Lord helps those who help themselves” is not a Biblical quote, but I do wish to question what it has come to mean.
The Lord helps those who:
Help themselves to all the food on the table?
Help themselves to the fruits of another’s labor?
Help themselves to another’s spouse?
Help themselves to another’s home?
Help themselves to another’s land?
Help themselves to another’s business?
Help themselves to another’s opportunities?
Many of the dispossessed are so because our society applauds those who help themselves to more than is needed, leaving little or nothing for others to help themselves with.
