Richard Heyman joined the U.S. Army Air Corps to serve in WWII. At 19 years old, he flew a fighter plane over Normandy in June, 1944 to protect the soldiers on the ground during Operation Overlord. Richard again served, this time in the new U.S. Air Force, as a pilot in the Korean War. Richard stayed on active duty as a pilot trainer, among other duties, and then spent two tours as a fighter-bomber unit commander during the Viet Nam War. In Creswell, we know him as a columnist for The Chronicle, and an active member of Creswell VFW Post 4039
