School Board evaluation shows improvement from past years

At the work session meeting held on Oct. 3, Creswell School Board analyzed findings from the 2017-18 academic year evaluation, which overall rated the school board consistently at proficient and effective – an improvement from the 2016-17 evaluation where results were spread across the evaluation sheet.
The results come from the board self-evaluation and group evaluation. The self-evaluation, which is rated from one to four, found the board of directors consistently at proficient (three) in the topics of leadership and policy and engagement, with marks going into exemplary (four) in performance monitoring and board operations. Only one category, sustainable organization, had members in basic (two), only partially understanding the Creswell School District funds and would need outside support to share or teach the information. A comment suggested requesting discussion to strengthen knowledge prior to an annual budget meeting.
The group evaluation rated the school board collectively and is made up of the six board of directors and eight district staff members. The evaluation is rated from ineffective to effective and covers the categories: mission and planning, communication, conduct and ethics, employs superintendent and delegates authority, meetings of the board and monitors district performance.
For almost each topic, the board was considered either effective or on the right track. When talking about conduct and ethics, as well as meetings of the board, results ranged from effective to ineffective – there were no comments addressing the ineffective rating.
Constructive comments called for more two-way communication and public relations with the community, local government and news outlets, which Board Chair Tim Rogers said the new Public Relations Committee will address to bring forth more engagement.
Overall Rogers said there was ”room for improvement,” but the board is aware of that and has plans to move forward.
”I think that’s the most important,” he said.
Director Mike Anderson said there has been ”good, steady improvement” in the last two to three years.
During the meeting, the board also discussed its goals for the next year, which are a continuation of last year’s goals. The goals will be added as an action item for the Oct. 10 regular board meeting to be approved.
The next school board meeting will take place on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend.
