Through the Eyes of the Colonel – Addressing student safety as new school year looms

Every year when it is about time for the schools to reopen and classes to resume, we are reminded in many publications to watch out for kids crossing streets and to be more vigilant watching for them to cross in the middle of the block, etc.
I want to add the warning also to parents. Advise your children to be extra cautious, advise them to the hazards, demonstrate proper behavior and teach them that while they have the right of way in marked crossings, that doesn’t guarantee a driver sees the wee ones or recognize a child running, trying to get to school on time.
Remember the pedestrians may have the right-of-way, but if they are hit they will be injured or killed, and the loved ones can never be replaced. Regardless of who is at fault, the injured party will be just as hurt or deceased.
