Special awards were presented to outstanding student musicians as Creswell High School’s music program presented their Spring Concert and Awards event on May 24.
Caleb Holt received an award based on his performance at the State Solo and Ensemble competition; Jackson Velarde received an Outstanding Musicianship award; Anastasia Newell was named Vocal Soloist of the Year; Jazz Band 1 trombones were named Section of the Year; and a Jazz Band Leadership Award was presented to Justin O’Reilly and Blake Nelson.
The Concert Band opened with ”They Led My Lord Away,” ”The Old Red Mill” and ”Earthdance.”
Jazz Band 2 performed an ”Earth, Wind and Fire Dance Mix”; ”Everything,” featuring a vocal solo by Katie Allison; and ”Faith.”
The Concert Choir, accompanied by Velarde, sang ”Flying Free,” with a flute solo by Natalie Brooks”; ”Dreams”; and ”So Set Its Sun in Thee.”
The Jazz Choir performed ”Red Clay,” featuring solos by Mathieu Foster, Newell and Nelson; ”Shadow of Your Smile”; and ”Mr. Hooper’s Find It in a Minute Book,” with solos by Newell, Kylie Hecker, Destin Halvorson, Foster and Jekay Bosisto.
Jazz Band 1 closed the concert with ”Sesame Street”; ”Celia,” performed by a quartet comprised of Velarde, O’Reilly, Foster and Nelson, with a solo by Foster; and ”Bemsha Swing,” featuring solos by Velarde, O’Reilly, Zach Wichman and Nelson.
Leadership Honors in Music – Silver Star awards were presented to Foster, Halvorson, Hecker, Nelson, Velarde, Wichman, Newell, Justin O’Reilly, Nathaniel Diamond, Karissa Bailor, Garrett Adkins and Kyra Anderson.
Leadership Honors in Music – Gold Star awards went to Brooks, Holt, Zach Culp, Hallie Drago, Javier Fregoso, Brooklyn Grubbs, Cole Hicks, Abby Hoggard, Joshua Jenkins, Tara Keepers, Josiah Lee, Abby Mercer, Anna Mercer, Leah Murphy, Amy Myers, Katie McKillop, Cam Nguyen, Amanda O’Reilly, Isaac Pinkham, Zach Schmidt and Hugo Taura.
”It was a phenomenal show that truly showcased the exceptional talents of our student musicians and Ms. Green,” said Creswell Music Boosters President Mandy Hoggard. ”Continued thanks to the Creswell community and the school administration for their support of music education this year.”
