Refugee resettlement offers learning, annual fundraiser: Refugee Resettlement Coalition of Lane County (RRCLC) presents the opportunity to learn about the state of refugees and asylum seekers in the community during its annual virtual fundraiser, “Welcoming Our New Neighbors.” The event is Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. Attendees will receive a Zoom link prior to the event starting. ‘Clothing Room’ opens for winter in Springfield: After over a year of closure for the Clothing Room at Catholic Community Services, it will reopen Nov. 8 in Springfield. The service provides free clothes to those in need. Covid-related precautions and sanitizing are in effect, and clients will be allowed in the room one-at-a-time. To volunteer, contact [email protected]. Visit ccslc.org for more information. On Sunday, Nov. 7, people can drive by 1025 G St. to drop off new or gently used clothing.
Cottage Grove Library receives language grant: Friends of the Cottage Grove Public Library received a $70,560 grant for programs and updates to better serve Spanish and Mayan language-speaking communities, and to support a community health worker who can act as a resource navigator for individuals and families who come to the library, community center, or Senior & Disabled Services offices for information and services. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to help connect our Latino community to resources and a place where they feel welcome,” said Natasha Chitow, head librarian.
Creswell Heritage Foundation schedules Dec. 4 event: Updates on Creswell Heritage Foundation this fall from Verlean McCoy.
* The exterior siding project was completed in October. All sides are restored.
* The foundation received a $15,000 grant from Kinsman Foundation toward the interior.
* The organization is fundraising for that project, which is expected to start next summer.
* An Open House is scheduled Dec. 4 as part of the Creswell Chamber of Commerce Winter Lights events.
Springfield Chamber partners to offer welding internships: The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Lane Community College, brought four private industry partners together in October offering paid internships to LCC welding students through the College’s Cooperative Education department. This is an outcome of discussions brought forth by industry partners through the Chamber’s #WorkReady Education Committee, showcasing a substantial need for welders amongst local organizations.
“The demand for welding talent outpaces the supply,” says Avril Watt, Site GM of Astec Franklin Blvd. “My hope is that this will provide a win-win-win outcome – the students get real-world experience in parallel with classroom instruction; LCC retains students through graduation; employers gain a pipeline of welding talent to eventually hire full time.”
Said Paige Sharpe, the Chamber’s director of Development and Talent Initiatives: “We are incredibly cognizant of the local demand for skilled workforce, and are grateful for the opportunity to bring stakeholders together to offer solutions in developing a talent pipeline.”
