Creswell prepares for National Night Out

CRESWELL – Creswell City Councilor Clark Kent shared details about updates coming to this year’s National Night Out event during a city council meeting last week.

Kent reported new and traditional features folks might expect at the annual event on behalf of the Public Safety Committee.

National Night Out is an annual partner campaign with The Lane County Sheriff’s Office and The City of Creswell that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out strengthens relationships between neighbors and law enforcement while fostering a sense of community.

This year’s event falls on August 4 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will include classic sights, such as the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, folks from the Creswell Sheriff’s Office, and vendors like Point S, Tractor Supply, and Farmlands. The committee is also hoping to have the dunk tank ready for the event after it underwent minor repairs.

New attractions are also underway, according to Kent.

“We’re looking at Franz to bring a grilled cheese truck. We’re hoping that will happen, but the event is outside their work hours, so if they can get the staffing for that and approval, they’ll be there,” he said.

If Franz does not get approval, Kent said the committee is also considering a local lemonade-and-hot-dog cart for the event. The classic pie-eating contest will have a twist this year. Rather than pie, folks will compete by eating donuts.

“We’re going to go to one of two extremes: it will either be mini donuts, like donut holes, or giant donuts,” Kent said.

He said parking logistics have been figured out and recommended that the public works department briefly close 4th Street between A and B streets to facilitate setup, either the night before or the morning of the event. A few things still need to be completed, like ordering merchandise and raffle supplies.

There will be one more Public Safety Committee meeting before National Night Out. The next and final meeting is on July 8, from 6 to 7 p.m.
