■ GLENWOOD — A Lane County sheriff’s deputy was injured while making an arrest on July 31 after responding to a report of menacing in the 4200 block of Franklin Boulevard. Deputies arrived to find that 40-year-old Douglas Alvin Haley had assaulted an employee at a convenience store and was threatening others in the area. Haley, who had broken into another location, barricaded himself inside after breaking a window. One deputy sustained serious injuries during the entry but continued to engage Haley until he was detained. The injured deputy required a tourniquet and was taken to a local hospital, where he is now recovering in stable condition. Haley was arrested and booked into the Lane County Jail on multiple charges, including unlawful use of a weapon, attempted assault, robbery, burglary, reckless endangering, menacing, criminal mischief, and trespass.
Cottage Grove man arrested after car chase
■ COTTAGE GROVE – On July 27, deputies in Lane County apprehended 40-year-old Kyle Littleton Lasater of Cottage Grove following a vehicle chase. Deputies spotted Lasater, who had active felony warrants, while he was driving on Bryson Sears Road. When deputies attempted to stop him, Lasater fled, leading to a pursuit. He abandoned his vehicle in the 78000 block of Bryson Sears Road and attempted to escape on foot. Deputies established a perimeter and deployed K9 Tito, who assisted in locating Lasater shortly thereafter. He was arrested and booked into the Lane County Jail and charged with forgery in the first degree, felon in possession of a weapon (two counts), criminal mischief in the first degree, attempting to elude a police officer (three counts, felony), attempting to elude a police officer (misdemeanor), reckless driving (two counts), reckless endangering (three counts), violation of a restraining order, and assault in the fourth degree.
Minor charged with bike hit-and-run on Main Street
■ SPRINGFIELD – On July 27, at about 7:53 p.m., Springfield Police responded to a hit-and-run incident in the 4500 block of Main Street. A 39-year-old man riding a three-wheeled bicycle was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop and assist. The victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Following the incident, police obtained video footage from a nearby business that helped identify the suspect vehicle. After a tip from a community member, police located and interviewed the driver, a 17-year-old female from Springfield. She has been charged with felony hit-and-run, and the case will be handled by the Juvenile Division of the Lane County District Attorney’s Office. All passengers in the vehicle, also juveniles, have been identified and are cooperating with authorities. The names of those involved are not being released.
Deputies investigate fatal crashes near Pleasant Hill
■ PLEASANT HILL – On July 26, deputies and fire personnel responded to a vehicle crash on Pheasant Lane near Wheeler Road. A caller reported seeing two individuals lying on the ground outside the vehicle. Emergency responders, including EMTs, arrived on scene, and Life Flight was requested. Initial investigations revealed that there were two occupants in the vehicle, both of whom may have been ejected during the collision. The passenger, Adison Bernice Stading, 19, of Woodland, Wash., died from her injuries. The driver was transported to an area hospital by Life Flight in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.
The next day, on July 27, a three-vehicle crash on Highway 58 near Rattlesnake Road claimed the life of an 18-year-old driver. At approximately 5:24 p.m., Leilani Kana’i Barto of Dallas was driving a gray Mazda 3 sedan eastbound when she attempted to pass traffic and collided head-on with a westbound silver Toyota Highlander SUV, operated by 74-year-old Arthur Allen Corliss of Eugene. The Highlander was then struck by a westbound Kenworth semi-truck, driven by 38-year-old Anthony Richard Luna from Sutherlin. Barto was pronounced dead at the scene, while Corliss was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Luna was not injured in the incident. The crash shut down the highway for about four hours as authorities investigated. Preliminary reports suggest that speed may have contributed to the collision. Oregon State Police were assisted on the scene by the Pleasant Hill Goshen Fire & Rescue, Eugene Police Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
