With much of Oregon experiencing drought this summer, the Oregon Water Resources Department (OWRD) is urging residents to conserve water to mitigate the impact on communities and ecosystems. Director Ivan Gall highlighted the importance of wise water use now and in the future:
- Measure sprinkler use: Check how much water your sprinkler system uses to avoid overwatering.
- Check for toilet leaks: A leaking toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water each month.
- Water deeply twice a week: This promotes healthy root growth and prevents overwatering.
- Install water-efficient aerators: Easy to install and inexpensive, aerators can help reduce water usage.
- Water during cool hours: Early morning or late evening watering minimizes evaporation.
- Inspect for outdoor leaks: Ensure your watering system is ready for summer by fixing leaks and securing hose connections.
- Add mulch and compost: A layer of mulch helps soil retain moisture.
- Use water-saving bathroom fixtures: WaterSense fixtures use at least 20% less water.
- Adjust watering based on weather: Modify your watering schedule according to seasonal conditions.
- Let your dishwasher do the work: Dishwashers generally use less water than washing by hand.
