With outdoor burning now closed and wildfire season quickly approaching, the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) is urging Lane County residents to prepare for wildfire smoke now and to protect their health before it arrives.
“Wildfire smoke is part of Oregon summers now, so preparing before it’s here matters; especially for families with young kids or anyone with breathing problems,” said Matt Sorensen, LRAPA’s public affairs manager. “A little prep today can make a big difference when smoke rolls in.”
The SMOKE Ready Framework
S – Stay Informed: Check air quality regularly at fire.airnow.gov and monitor weather forecasts.
M – Minimize Exposure: Use a portable HEPA air purifier and replace your HVAC air filter. Children and older adults are most vulnerable to smoke.
O – Optimize Your System: Close windows and doors during smoke events. Check your air conditioner settings to make sure it isn’t pulling smoky air inside.
K – Keep Supplies Ready: Stock at least five days of medications and food. Keep extra air filters and N95 masks on hand.
E – Establish a Clean Room: Pick one room in your home as the clean room, add a HEPA air purifier, and avoid cooking or using candles during smoke events. It’s your family’s smoke refuge.
Quick tips for cleaner indoor air
■ Keep doors and windows shut when smoke is present; it’s simple and a critical step.
■ Seal any gaps around doors, windows, and especially any window AC units.
■ Use a MERV 13 or higher filter in your HVAC system.
■ Consider buying a HEPA air purifier now, before smoke season starts and supplies run short. Bonus, HEPA air purifiers also help reduce allergy symptoms in the spring.
