A mild winter and spring-like weather have allowed the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) to plant approximately 2 million seedlings in state forests, putting them ahead of schedule for the season.
The seedlings, primarily Douglas Fir (74%), are part of a reforestation strategy that includes Hemlock, Western Red Cedar, Noble Fir, and others to promote diversity and resilience. ODF sourced 2.3 million seedlings from nine northwest nurseries, with nearly 300,000 extras destined for various environmental initiatives beyond state forests.
The planting, predominantly carried out by private contractors, involves rigorous monitoring to ensure proper planting technique.
