Cottage Grove honors sports legend Dyrol Burleson

COTTAGE GROVE – Back on Aug. 25, 2025, Cottage Grove Mayor Candace Solesbee issued a proclamation to honor Dyrol Burleson, a celebrated athlete and historic figure from the city.

Burleson, a member of the Cottage Grove High School Hall of Fame, made significant contributions to athletics, including setting the 1500 meters record in 1958 and becoming the first track and field scholarship athlete at the University of Oregon. He also gained recognition as the second American runner to break the 4-minute mile.

Burleson represented the United States in the 1960 Rome and 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, further solidifying his legacy in the sports community. He has been inducted into both the Cottage Grove High School Athletics Hall of Fame and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

In honor of his remarkable achievements, a portion of Burleson’s training route has been designated as the “Dyrol Burleson Trail.” Coach Bud Taylor accepted the award on Burleson’s behalf.

Last week, city staff installed signs along River Road, directing visitors along the new trail in tribute to this local legend.
