Letter to the editor – ‘Many thanks:’ More gratitude for local journalism

Dear Editor:

I wish to compliment The Chronicle and staff on the Dec 25 issue of the papers. Also, I would hope and pray that you all have a very happy New Year, and many more to come.

I was impressed with Noel Nash’s recent column (Extra! Extra! Donors make a difference). I thank you for the year-end’ review of those of us in South Lane and Springfield, who have friends and neighbors who have passed on. The review that you print is always interesting.

Also, I was moved by the Letter to the Editor of Bruce Kelsch of Cottage Grove (When America Was United By Peace in 1945). It was so touching in light of today’s world of politics. I was 5-years-old and remember very well the late morning of Dec 7, 1941. We were getting ready for church, and the news on the radio broke in with the announcement about Pearl Harbor being bombed. I remember living in a small town in western Washington – the neighbors all out on the sidewalk, talking about the latest world catastrophe.

Brings back memories of 1945 – I believe September, when the Japanesesurrendered. My parents and I were visiting relatives in Montana. Many people from miles around were downtown in Big Timber … fireworks, dancing in the streets, celebrating the event. My mother’s two brothers served in the Pacific, and on my father’s side of the family, older cousins served in Europe.

Finally, but not least, I compliment the back page of The Chronicle for recognizing several civic educational groups in the area.

Keep up the good work. And the very best of luck in keeping your paper afloat during the tough times for news print.

Don Williams,
Cottage Grove
