Officials recommend the following safety tips for outdoor exploration in Lane County:

  • Always inform someone of your destination and expected return time.
  • Check conditions before departure; rain in the valley can lead to ice at higher elevations.
  • Be prepared to stay out overnight, even if you remain in your vehicle.
  • Bring offline navigation maps, as cell service may be unreliable.
  • Always wear a life jacket when on the water.
  • If you become lost, stay put and find a way to signal or make your location visible. Carrying a whistle and flashlight can be crucial for safety in the outdoors.
