David Richard Johnson: April 22, 1950 – Nov. 25, 2025

David Richard Johnson, born on April 22, 1950, passed away on November 25, 2025, in Cottage Grove, Oregon, at the age of 75. Born to Frank and Florence (Turner) Johnson in Helena, Montana, David grew up to become a cornerstone of both his family and his community.

In December 1953, David’s parents moved the family to Santa Barbara, California, because his maternal grandmother needed to relocate to a warmer climate. David attended San Marcos High School, where he excelled in track and cross-country. He graduated from San Marcos in 1968 and then continued his education at Santa Barbara Community College, University of California Santa Barbara, and the University of Missoula, ultimately earning a bachelor’s degree in political science.

David’s professional life was marked by successful sales careers in insurance, the printing industry, and pharmaceuticals. His work ethic and affable demeanor won him the respect and friendship of colleagues and clients alike. Following his retirement in 2008, his preference for a cooler climate led him to settle in Cottage Grove, Oregon.

As a proud veteran’s ally, David served as president of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary (#3473) and as Supreme President of the Military Order of the Cootie Auxiliary. David’s dedication to service extended to his time with the Goleta Rotary club and significant involvement with the Elks Lodge.

Outside of his professional life, David dedicated himself to an array of interests. He was an avid reader, with a particular passion for history and mystery books. His love of sports was reflected through golfing, refereeing high school football, umpiring baseball from youth leagues through high school, and serving as president of the Dos Pueblos Little League in Goleta. David’s creativity shone through in his talent for making jewelry and woodworking. He also found joy in cooking, especially preparing soups for the local church, an act of generosity that reflected both his warmth and his desire to care for others. Moreover, his love for travel and the outdoors was reflected in his numerous cruises, exotic excursions, extensive cross-country drives, and regular fishing and camping trips.

A true family man, David is lovingly remembered by his partner of 15 years, Wanda K. Mosegard; his sons, Michael (Maily) Johnson of Goleta, CA, Matthew Johnson of Santa Barbara, CA, and Christopher (Tamarin) Johnson of Goleta, CA; his sister, Linda Weston of Santa Maria, CA; his brother, John Johnson of Destin, FL; his four adoring granddaughters, Jaden, Jordyn, Bella, and Magnolia, as well as his former spouse, Gail Johnson-Plowman.

A celebration of David’s life will be held on December 20th, 2025, at 1 pm, at the United Methodist Church in Cottage Grove, OR.  David’s life was one of kindness, generosity, and leadership. He will be remembered not only as a committed member of his community but also as a cherished partner, father, grandfather, and friend. Arrangements are in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor David to consider a donation to their local Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
