Dear Editor:
As Executive Director of Emergence, the treatment provider for SMART Court, I was glad to see the Chronicle highlight the four recent graduates. Their success reflects what happens when accountability and high-quality treatment work hand in hand. We’re grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside our neighbors who find recovery, restore trust with loved ones, and move forward with their lives.
SMART Court works because it is built on evidence-based practices and a clear understanding of what drives real behavior change. Judge James Tierney deserves tremendous credit for his vision and leadership in shaping a court that is both firmly accountable and deeply compassionate. His commitment to best practices and consistent judicial engagement creates an environment where participants can succeed.

The program also relies on steady leadership from the City of Springfield. Mayor Vangordon, the City Council, and City Manager Nancy Newton have provided consistent support that ensures SMART Court has the resources and stability required to keep people engaged in treatment rather than cycling through the justice system.
The graduation event reminds us that when a community invests in hope, structure, and treatment, people will succeed. I believe Springfield becomes stronger for it.
