Call for entries: Cai Emmons short fiction contest

Oregon and Washington writers can submit unpublished short stories to the Cai Emmons Short Fiction Contest until Oct. 31. The contest, launched by Wordcrafters in Eugene, honors the celebrated local author Cai Emmons and her themes of grief, family dynamics, and environmental issues.

The total prizes are $1,900, including a $700 grand prize and various $200 awards for categories such as magical realism and female protagonists. Winning stories will be published in an anthology debuting at the Wordcrafters Be Writing Festival in February 2026.

Submissions (up to 3,000 words) can be made via Submittable for a fee of $7 ($5 for Wordcrafters members), with waivers available for BIPOC, QTGNC, and disabled writers. Detailed guidelines can be found at wordcrafters.org/cai-emmons-short-fiction-contest.

Cai Emmons, who passed away in 2023 from ALS, was known for her imaginative fiction featuring strong female leads.
