One dead after domestic assualt incident

SPRINGFIELD — On Aug. 26, at approximately 11:15 a.m., the Springfield Police Department responded to a home in the 700 block of 60th Street following a report of a domestic assault. The victim fled to a neighbor’s residence, where 911 was called.

The victim reported being assaulted by her husband and heard a gunshot as she escaped. It remains unclear if the gunshot was directed at her. The gunfire did not strike her. Officers evacuated the victim to a safe location for medical evaluation of her non-life-threatening injuries.

While officers secured the perimeter, medics transported the victim to a local hospital. The Springfield Police Department requested assistance from the Metro drone team, a collaboration of officers from both the Springfield and Eugene police departments, to aid in perimeter containment and inspect the interior of the residence. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office also provided an armored vehicle response.

Crisis negotiators attempted to contact the suspect but were unsuccessful in doing so. Investigators later suggested that the gunfire heard may have been a self-inflicted gunshot by the suspect. Drones were used to visually confirm that the suspect was deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers entered the residence, verified the situation, and secured the scene. Springfield Police Detectives are leading the investigation.
