What do Texas Roadhouse, Springfield Library, Bloodworks NW, Springfield Special Weapons and Tactics, Target, and face painting have in common? They were all represented at the Springfield Police Department’s “National Night Out” this past Tuesday evening.

NNO was Aug. 5 at Les Schwab Sports Park and invited community members to learn more about SPD as well as other participating vendors. Visitors could see various SPD vehicles, learn about special units & teams within the department, and meet officers and staff.
According to volunteer workers at the event, roughly 200 folks strolled through the park to see what was being offered.
Lt. Kyle Potter sat atop a tank full of water where 5-year-old Isaiah and 7-year-old Lily Archer threw balls that triggered him to fall in. K-9 demos showcasing obedience, tracking, and apprehension drills were shown by Officer O’Leary and K-9 Kirby, as well as by Officer Garcia-Cash and his pup Poker. New Police Chief Resch and her Bullmastiff Bunker were there as well.
Folks were able to explore police drones, the Metro Explosives Disposal Unit (MEDU), SWAT equipment, firetrucks, and even sit on Eugene Police Department’s motorcycles. The Oregon Department of Forestry brought in a water truck and informed people about the importance of fire prevention.

Sweetbay Shave Ice was a hit, with constant long lines as they served up free snow cones. Starbucks gave away free drinks, Texas Roadhouse handed out dinner rolls, and Springfield Utility Board had its big water mister set up, keeping people cool and hydrated. Springfield Target even made an appearance in appreciation for their Asset Protection team, who work closely with SPD.
