Special Olympics

The Special Olympics Oregon Summer State Games concluded last weekend in Corvallis, marking its 53rd year and its second year at the Oregon State University campus. In addition, Nike and Special Olympics announced a three-year global partnership over the weekend, aiming to “create access to sport for all youth.” The partnership will focus on Oregon, Berlin, Johannesburg and Tokyo.

The Oregon Summer State Games for athletics (track and field), bocce, golf and softball had over 1,200 athletes this weekend. Previous to the championship, all athletes and Unified partners trained in their local regional-level competitions held around the state for a minimum of eight weeks to qualify at the Summer State Games. This championship also provided an opportunity for a 2026 Special Olympics USA Games berth in Minneapolis.

Cottage Grove and the Eugene/Springfield team competed in the championships. The Eugene/Springfield track and field 4×100-meter relay team received fourth overall. Harper Anderson, an 8-year-old Creswell resident, won the standing long jump and took third in the 200-meter dash.

The delegates were housed in the campus dorms at Oregon State University. Along with their scheduled competitions, the athletes also enjoyed the Olympic Town festival area, the parade of athletes, the opening ceremonies, a victory dance, and a Saturday night delegates’ dinner.
