Shots fired as firemen, police battle house fire; one man dead

SPRINGFIELD –  One is dead after shots were fired in a burning home, police said.

On July 3, around 9:40 p.m., Springfield Police and Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a house fire in the 400 block of 37th Street. The caller said she and her husband were in a dispute before the fire started.

Officers found the woman outside the house while gunshots were going off inside, and the fire grew. Eugene and county officers shielded firefighters.

Once emergency personnel put the fire out, they found a person deceased inside.

Police said the fire was primarily contained to the residence, with the neighboring homes sustaining limited damage.

The man reportedly poured gasoline throughout the house, then intentionally lit the house on fire while firing a firearm inside the residence, according to police.

Names are being withheld at this time, police said.
