The Nike Outdoor Nationals, an event for high school and middle school track and field athletes, finished at Hayward Field last week.
It also wrapped up Cottage Grove’s Carter Bengtson’s high school career, and in the most Bengtson fashion, he ended it with a personal best and new school record in the 5000 meters (14.55.14). He competed in the “championship” division.
Kylie Leonard of Creswell ran a PR of 1.07.24 in the 400 meters in the “emerging elite” division.
The Pleasant Hill relay squad of Isabel Hammond-Mendez, Trinity Smead, Soleis Jones, and Ellie Epperson combined for a time of 4.33.24 in the sprint medley relay. They ran two rounds of the 200 meters, one round of the 400 meters and the 800 meters in the emerging elite division.
Tyler Raven represented Thurston in the triple jump and earned 9th overall.
Summer Games
The Northwest’s annual high school all-star football game, the Les Schwab Bowl, kicks off Friday at Lewis & Clark College. The game features players from Classes 3A-6A with Team Columbia vs. Team Willamette. Rising Springfield senior Kai Brusasco was selected to play as a right guard and/or defensive tackle. Graduating senior of Springfield, Clay Rhoades, was chosen to play in the 7th annual East-West Shrine All-Star Football game in Baker City on July 26.
Colts softball honored
Springfield Mayor Sean VanGordon and the City Council recognized the Thurston High School girls’ softball team for its second-place finish in the OSAA Class 5A state championship at the June 16 Springfield City Council meeting.

Special Olympics
Special Olympics Oregon (SOO) hosted one of its summer regional bocce tournaments at Bob Artz Park and Springfield High School on June 14. On the same day, the summer regional softball tournament also took place at Bob Artz Park. SSO offers track and field, bocce, golf, and softball during summer. For the bocce regionals, 12 athletes represented the Cottage Grove team and 42 athletes played for the Eugene/Springfield team, which includes Creswell, Lowell, Junction City, and Veneta. Six athletes played for the Eugene/Springfield softball team.
Oregon equestrian
South Valley Oregon High School Equestrians Team (OHSET) competed at the Pacific Northwest Invitational (PNWIC) in Redmond last weekend. Pleasant Hill’s Wylie Blake earned 5th in Break-Away Roping. Anna Cole of Springfield placed 10th in the Showmanship category and 7th in Western Horsemanship. Addilyn Moore of Creswell placed 8th in Barrels and 7th in Figure 8.
