SPRINGFIELD – Carlos Serrano, a recent graduate of Thurston High School, is photographed with his mother, Karina Guzman, outside the PublicHouse on June 16, holding a fresh copy of the annual “Class Acts: Graduation Magazine,” which features Serrano on the cover.
“My friend in Cottage Grove saw it online and told me my son was on the cover,” Guzman said. “I got so excited!” Photographer Curtis Johnson, an incoming senior at Thurston High, captured this moment, which is particularly special as she said her son doesn’t often smile.
Post-grad, Serrano plans to study criminal justice at Lane Community College before transferring to a four-year institution. His interest in criminal justice was sparked by a forensics class in high school, particularly the science and technology used in the field. He aspires to become a homicide detective one day.
The magazine is available in this week’s edition of The Chronicle, and an e-edition can be found online at Chronicle1909.com. The annual publication is funded through community partnerships and donations to The Chronicle Foundation, which supports education and nonprofit journalism in our communities.
