UPDATE: Due to anticipated rain, the organizers on Tuesday canceled this event.
COTTAGE GROVE – One out of five adults in the United States experiences mental illness each year, according to data from the National Alliance of Mental Illness. May is “Mental Health Awareness Month,” and South Lane Mental Health is hosting a “Treat Yourself” celebration at Bohemia Park on South 10th Street.
The event starts at 9 a.m. on May 17 at the Bohemia Park Pavilion. It will include a bake sale with coffee and juice, self-care raffle baskets, and free yoga. All of the proceeds go toward mental health services through SLMH.
Alison Canino, executive director, and development manager Maureen Bell prompted the event. “We hope that it will be the first of many events that allow South Lane Mental Health to connect with community members and promote mental health wellness,” Canino said.
Everyone is welcome. “It will definitely be a family-friendly event,” she said. Free, gentle yoga starts at 9:30 a.m. and can be modified to fit all body types, skill levels, and mobility. People passionate about mental health wellness and those who want to learn more about accessing services with SLMH are encouraged to attend.
According to Canino, SLMH is dedicated to providing safe and affirming care to all of its clients.
“Many of our clients are absolutely impacted by the rhetoric and general confusion that has been created around social security benefits, accessing gender-affirming care, and immigration,” she said.
